The Ponoka Hospital and Care Centre is a busy acute care facility with a vibrant emergency department. You will work as a member of the inter-disciplinary team with responsibilities including collecting biological specimens, performing ECGs and reporting results. This position also includes coverage at the 2nd hospital located in Ponoka, the Centennial Centre for Mental Health and Brain Injury. Shifts will be scheduled at this world class mental health facility as operationally needed.

As a Medical Laboratory Assistant I, you will provide high quality service to clients of the clinical laboratory in an effective, efficient and safe manner. You will be responsible for a variety of laboratory functions including procurement, handling, processing, dispatching and testing of specimens, performing procedures and reporting results.

Completion of an accredited Medical Laboratory Assistant program or equivalent.
Additional Required Qualifications:Cardiology training and experience including ECG's and Holter Monitors. All blood collection procedures including: venipuncture, micropunctures, blood culture collection as well as collections on all patient ages including newborns, pediatrics and geriatrics. Drivers License is required for mobile collections. Training and experience with macroscopic and microscopic urinalysis. Equivalency is defined as completion of a Medical Laboratory Technologist (MLT) and/or Combined Laboratory and Xray Technologist (CLXT) program in Canada; completion of a Medical Lab Technician/Technologist program outside of Canada; and/or MLT or CLXT students who have completed their phlebotomy training/rotation. Applicants with a high school diploma may be considered. Upon hire, you will be required to complete on-the-job phlebotomy training provided by APL at no cost, and formal training courses offered by SAIT (Southern Alberta Institute of Technology) or NAIT (Northern Alberta Institute of Technology). The costs associated with these formal training courses will be your responsibility. You will be required to complete these training requirements within your probationary period, as per the Health Sciences Association of Alberta (HSAA) collective agreement.
Preferred Qualifications:Minimum 2 years experience in a healthcare setting is preferred, experience with patients with varying mental health needs is an asset. Familiar with Clinitek Advantus. Recent experience with Muse and Cardioday. Recent and relevant experience with Epic Beaker. Ability to communicate effectively in English. Good organizational skills and ability to assume responsibility. Good interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to work independently and promote teamwork.
