Your Opportunity:

The successful candidate will be responsible for performing a variety of laboratory support functions at the University of Alberta Hospital. Key responsibilities include receiving, accessioning, and distributing patient specimens to appropriate testing areas or the referral bench, as well as performing phlebotomy as required. Primary duties involve the accurate entry of specimens into the Laboratory Information System (LIS), reviewing specimen acceptance criteria—including stability—and ensuring proper delivery to designated testing departments or storage areas. Additional responsibilities include preparing packing lists, accessioning requisitions for referred-in specimens, receiving and processing referred-in samples, specimen distribution, and coordinating specimen send-outs. Phlebotomy duties may be required depending on operational needs.

Description:

As a Medical Laboratory Assistant I, you will provide high quality service to clients of the clinical laboratory in an effective, efficient and safe manner. You will be responsible for a variety of laboratory functions including procurement, handling, processing, dispatching and testing of specimens, performing procedures and reporting results.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of an accredited Medical Laboratory Assistant program or equivalent.

Additional Required Qualifications:

Recent training in Connect Care and Rover. Demonstrated proficiency in laboratory procedures and data entry is required. Recent phlebotomy experience within the last 6 months. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively within a team environment are essential. The successful candidate must be adaptable and flexible in an environment that is subject to frequent change and interruptions. Excellent communication skills are required, including the ability to listen, comprehend, and respond clearly and accurately—whether in person, by phone, or in writing. The candidate must consistently demonstrate a professional, respectful, and courteous demeanor,

Preferred Qualifications:

Previous experience working in a hospital or a high-volume laboratory environment. Familiarity with laboratory quality and safety standards. Current experience in Specimen Receiving area is an asset. Proven time management skills and the ability to prioritize tasks in a fast-paced, dynamic setting are necessary.
