Your Opportunity:
Working along with other Health Care Professionals, the Laboratory Assistant 1 will provide laboratory support to the Grey Nuns Community Hospital in Edmonton. In this role, your primary responsibilities include phlebotomy for adults, children, and infants using both macro and micro techniques. You will also be accessioning patient specimens, troubleshooting problem specimens, and performing reception duties. You have excellent computer literacy. Previous experience with healthcare information systems is an asset. Equally comfortable working independently and as part of a team, you can develop and maintain positive working relationships with your colleagues and other healthcare professionals you may interact with. You have good judgement and decision-making skills and will conduct yourself according to the Alberta Health Services Code of Conduct and the APL Values of Kindness, Inclusion, Innovation, Agility, and Accuracy.

As a Medical Laboratory Assistant I, you will provide high quality service to clients of the clinical laboratory in an effective, efficient and safe manner. You will be responsible for a variety of laboratory functions including procurement, handling, processing, dispatching and testing of specimens, performing procedures and reporting results.

Completion of an accredited Medical Laboratory Assistant program or equivalent.
Additional Required Qualifications:Recent phlebotomy training or equivalent work experience required. Recent formal urinalysis training course or equivalent work experience required. Equivalency is defined as completion of a Medical Laboratory Technologist (MLT) and/or Combined Laboratory and Xray Technologist (CLXT) program in Canada; completion of a Medical Lab Technician/Technologist program outside of Canada; and/or MLT or CLXT students who have completed their phlebotomy training/rotation. Applicants with a high school diploma may be considered. Upon hire, you will be required to complete on-the-job phlebotomy training provided by APL at no cost, and formal training courses offered by SAIT (Southern Alberta Institute of Technology) or NAIT (Northern Alberta Institute of Technology). The costs associated with these formal training courses will be your responsibility. You will be required to complete these training requirements within your probationary period, as per the Health Sciences Association of Alberta (HSAA) collective agreement.
Preferred Qualifications:Competency with the EPIC Information System. The consequential vacancy process may be used to fill any resulting vacancies.
