Do you have a love and aptitude for Next Generation Sequencing (NGS)? Are you a strong team player committed to delivering quality patient care? The Calgary Genetics & Genomics/Molecular Pathology (GGMP) team has an exciting opportunity for a Clinical Genetics Technologist I (CGTI) position supporting the new Genome Core facility at the Arthur J.E. Child Comprehensive Cancer Centre. The GGMP team, as part of Alberta Precision Laboratories (APL), provides complex genetic testing for a broad range of constitutional and acquired conditions, serving an important role in the provision of genetic and molecular pathology services for the province of Alberta. As part of the GGMP team, the CGTI will run and maintain NGS and related equipment, generate and analyze data, monitor quality standards, participate in test method evaluation and troubleshooting, and write standard operating procedures. This CGTI position will also involve rotations in the Cyto-Molecular laboratories at Alberta Children’s Hospital, and may also support the Cancer Cytogenetic, Molecular Pathology laboratories and/or research studies at the Arthur Child. Additional techniques may include preparation and culturing of constitutional or cancer samples, chromosome analysis, fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), nucleic acid extraction, chromosomal microarray analysis (CMA), real-time PCR or standard PCR, Sanger sequencing, allelic discrimination, and fragment analysis. The successful candidate is committed to providing quality patient care and is able to work both independently and collaboratively within a team environment to ensure accurate and timely results. This is a multi-site position.

Description:

As a Clinical Genetics Technologist (CGT) I, you will perform and interpret routine and complex testing for various genetic conditions using molecular and cytogenetic techniques according to established procedures. You will also participate in results entry into the laboratory information system (LIS), report generation, quality control, proficiency testing, lab safety procedures, literature review, test method evaluation, and document writing. Other duties include but are not limited to maintaining lab equipment and supplies, training students and fellows/residents, participating in accreditation activities, and pre-analytical testing processes including accessioning.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of a Bachelor's degree plus advanced diploma in Clinical Genetics. Active or eligible for registration with College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Alberta (CMLTA).

Additional Required Qualifications:

Canadian Society of Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS) certification in Clinical Genetics may be acceptable as an equivalent to an advanced diploma in Clinical Genetics. Experience with human cytogenetic processing and analysis techniques including proper use of ISCN nomenclature and specialized computer imaging platforms for karyotyping and FISH analysis. Experience with appropriate methodology and testing techniques applied in a molecular genetic laboratory, including but not limited to nucleic acid extraction, PCR, genotyping, sequencing as well as analytical software such as GeneMapper, Sequence Analysis, and SeqPilot. Proven critical thinking, analytical, problem solving, planning, and decision-making skills. Strong attention to detail as well as superior organizational and time management skills with ability to prioritize work and deliver accurate work under stressful conditions. Demonstrated ability to deal with conflicting and changing priorities, deadlines, and duties. English fluency with exceptional verbal and written communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

Five years experience in a diagnostic genetic laboratory performing cytogenetic and/or molecular genetic testing and interpretation. Two years recent experience in NGS of genomic DNA and application of ACMG germline variant interpretation guidelines. Experience supporting test method evaluation, writing lab documents/procedures. Experience with maintenance/troubleshooting of sequencing equipment. Experience with whole exome or whole genome sequencing. Coding or bioinformatic experience.
