Alberta Precision Laboratories (APL) needs someone like you for the role of Biosafety Officer (BSO) to oversee the implementation and management of APL's biosafety and biosecurity program, ensure compliance with biosafety regulations, provide training and risk assessments, and lead incident response efforts related to biological hazards. In addition to your strong attention to detail and good judgement, you have strong organizational and communication skills that enable you to work collaboratively with a diverse group of stakeholders. You have a solid understanding of biosafety regulations and knowledge of the requirements for maintaining compliance. APL Safety Department is a provincial department, and you will work with members located across the province. This position is located in Calgary Zone and provides direct support to APL sites in South Sector.
Description:
Reporting to the APL Safety Lead, the Biosafety Officer (BSO) manages and maintains the biosafety and biosecurity program. This includes policy development, program implementation, and compliance monitoring. The position conducts overarching, biosecurity, local and pathogen risk assessments and internal and external inspections/audits. The BSO oversees and documents biosafety and biosecurity-related training, health and safety training, assists in incident investigations, compiles and provides reports/documentation as required by regulatory agencies. Additionally, the position is responsible for liaising with the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) and Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), containment zone workers, environmental services workers and contractors on biosafety-related matters, as well as the continual improvement of the program. This role will also provide onsite preliminary occupational hygiene services, ergonomic assessments, fit testing and other related health and safety assessments. Role also supports the incident management program and health and safety document management.

Two-year post-secondary program. Training in microbiology or biosafety/biosecurity 3-5 or more years of related work experience in leading a biosafety/biosecurity program. Knowledge of microbiology appropriate to the risks associated with the controlled activities authorized by the organization’s license, attained through a combination of education, training and experience. Knowledge of the Human Pathogens and Toxins Act and the Regulations and any applicable federal or provincial legislation. Registered Biological Safety Officer (RBSO) and/or Certified Biological Safety Officer (CBSO). A minimum of a degree/diploma/certification in Occupational Health & Safety or related discipline and CRSP or CRST designation. If CRSP or CRST not present) candidate must already be enrolled in an accredited program with commitment to complete within 2 years must be provided.
Additional Required Qualifications:
A minimum of 3 years of experience in Occupational Health & Safety, Biosafety or a related field in an organization of significant size, complexity and diversity is preferred (healthcare experience an asset). In addition, a minimum of 3 years related work experience in leading a biosafety/biosecurity program. Facilitation/coordination experience in project planning, execution, reporting, monitoring and evaluation. Significant experience in problem solving, concerns resolution, investigation, and negotiation. Team leadership skills, including demonstrated ability and comfort with decision making responsibilities, coaching, and teaching, and the ability to inspire and build confidence in others demonstrated ability to foster relationships/partnerships with internal and external stakeholders.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in coordinating research projects or teams, complex data analysis and/or interpretation, evaluation methodologies, and developing formal reports.
