Your Opportunity:
Villa Caritas is a 150 bed acute secure geriatric psychiatry hospital. The hospital has 5 units each composed of 30 beds. Our facility provides comprehensive interdisciplinary assessment, individualized care and treatment with the goal of achieving maximum rehabilitation, optimal function and overall wellness to older adults with complex cognitive and psychiatric challenges. Patients admitted to our facility have been identified as having acute psychiatric symptoms and/or behavioral difficulties which significantly compromise their safety, physical and/or mental well-being. Our team delivers services through an interdisciplinary model in collaboration with medical personnel, community resources and family members in an effort to achieve the stabilization and successful discharge of our patients to an appropriate care setting. Unit 1A is one of two secure (locked) units for older adults who suffer from acute behavioral and/or psychological symptoms of a major neurocognitive disorder, also known as dementia. Description:
The Registered Nurse (RN) participates in nursing assessments and interventions, care planning, implementing prescribed treatments, administering medications, evaluating treatments, and monitoring/documenting treatment progress and patient/resident response. Acting as an advocate, coordinator and liaison for the patient/resident, the RN identifies needs and sets priorities in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team. The RN facilitates patient/resident and family education and discharge planning, and may be required to act in a charge nurse capacity. The RN is responsible for the provision of care in accordance with established standards, and the Mission, Vision, Values, policies and procedures of Covenant Health. This position is covered by the terms and conditions of the UNA Collective Agreement.

Graduate of a RN program or recognized equivalent required. Active registration with the College and Association of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CARNA) required. Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider (Level C) required. Additional Required Qualifications:Current and active registration with the College and Association of Registered Nurses of Alberta (C.A.R.N.A.) and/or the College of Registered Psychiatric Nurses of Alberta (C.R.P.N.A) required. Experience in mental health (Geriatric Psychiatry) or related settings required. Ability to provide leadership and function as a team member. Ability to work independently. Ability to work in a fast paced and, at times, highly stressful environment. Ability to recognize and manage the needs of dementia patients. Must be able to speak, read, and write English fluently. Strong assessment skills to recognize and respond appropriately to patient changes in status. Strong communication skills and ability to adapt communication style to meet varying needs. Good organizational and conflict resolution skills required. Excellent time management skills. Proven dependability. Ability to be objective in decision making. Ability to be proactive with independent learning needs and up to date with current competencies.
Preferred Qualifications:Current Non Violent Crisis Intervention (NCI) training preferred. I.V. certification and Alaris pump training preferred. Charge nurse experience preferred.
