Reporting to the General Counsel and Director, Risk Management, you will provide expert legal advice, support compliance, and help manage risk—ensuring our healthcare mission is upheld with integrity and professionalism. We are looking for a strategic thinker with strong communication skills and a proactive approach to solving complex legal issues. Someone able to build trusted relationships, collaborate across departments, and offer clear guidance on a range of legal and regulatory matters. With experience in stakeholder engagement and risk, this position will navigate sensitive issues with confidence and care. This position will support the development of policies and procedures aligned with legislation, liability, legal processes, and insurance. Legal counsel will advise on operational and personnel matters related to legal portfolios, initiate consultations, respond to legal queries, and manage insurer notifications. Description:
As a Legal Counsel, you will provide legal advice on a broad range of legal topics, including contracts, clinical legal, policy, privacy, risk management, insurance, corporate commercial and employment matters. This position will review research studies involving patients for legal, risk, liability and policy matters; Identify and respond to emerging and ongoing risk management issues, events or legal requests for Covenant Health and related entities/sites; Review, draft and negotiate contracts, including making recommendations for execution, including: fee for service arrangements, independent contractors, physician services, secondments, and practicums, lease of space and assets, financial services, revenue generation and research studies. The Legal Counsel is also responsible for acting as a legal resource to staff and management regarding various legal and policy issues; Reviewing and negotiating research agreements and providing recommendation for signature; Corresponding with Principal Investigator, pharmaceutical companies, and granting agencies as required. The position will assist with coordination of claims and potential claims, including liaising with insurers, external legal parties, patients/visitors and staff where necessary; Provide advice to resolve legal issues on behalf of all Covenant Health and related entities locations/sites and the Foundations; Participate in committees and working groups; Assist in monitoring the central file of all Covenant Health and related entities contracts; Monitor and assist with management of Covenant Health trademarks, copyrights, patents, patent applications, other intellectual property interests and licenses; Review agreements for liability purposes and coverage in collaboration with Risk Management and Insurance; Carry out other such duties within the scope of the position. This is a non-unionized position.

Bachelor’s Degree or Juris Doctor from an accredited law school. 3+ years legal practice experience at a law firm or corporate legal practice in relevant areas of law. Occasional travel to other Covenant Health or affiliate entities sites within province is required.
Additional Required Qualifications:
Excellent organizational skills with demonstrated ability to prioritize. Team-oriented approach to work and the ability to respond and communicate with all levels of internal staff and external personnel required. Ability to work independently and to meet tight regular deadlines required. Ability to handle inquiries, correspondence and assignments with the highest level of professionalism and strict confidentiality of all sensitive information required. Must possess an inquiring mind, be flexible to handle multiple tasks. Able to maintain a professional level of diplomacy, confidentiality and tact. Ability to function in an environment of complexity and ongoing change and to work under pressure to meet tight timelines. Must be adaptive to new demands and organizational challenges.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in the health care sector. Experience in the public sector, large organizational body is an asset.
