Your Opportunity:

As a Clinical Coding Specialist (CCS), you will review clinical documentation from patient health records and assign diagnoses and intervention codes using the ICD-10-CA/CCI classification systems in accordance with provincial, jurisdictional directives and CIHI rules and guidelines. In this position, you will use your thorough attention to detail to ensure validity, integrity and reliability of coded data and maintain a high standard of quality. You will have the opportunity to participate and contribute to data quality initiatives and workflow efficiencies. Applicants will be required to write and pass a provincial coding proficiency test with a score of 70% prior to advancing to the interview. If eligible, opportunity to work hybrid (on/off site).Key accountabilities include, but are not limited to: Reviews clinical documentation and applies diagnoses, interventions, and coding conventions to ensure the accuracy and completeness of coded data. Reviews and remediates edits and warnings.Identifies issues related to patient encounters, clinical documentation, coding and abstracting and escalates for guidance and resolution. Runs and reconciles various reports. The Employee shall maintain confidentiality of all Covenant Health information in accordance with Health Information Act, Freedom of Information and Privacy and other privacy legislation in effect and shall comply at all times with Covenant Health’s Information Privacy and Information Security policies. In addition to a competitive rate of pay, Covenant Health currently has a Northern Allowance in place to an annual maximum of $6,300. This allowance is non-pensionable and is payable on an hourly basis for all hours paid at the basic rate of pay.

Required Qualifications:

Required Qualifications: Graduate from a Canadian College of Health Information Management (CCHIM) recognized program for Health Information Management Professionals required. Registration with the Canadian Health Information Management Association (CHIMA) is required.

Additional Required Qualifications:

Knowledge of current Canadian Coding Standards and Discharge Abstract Database (DAD) and National Ambulatory Care Reporting Standards (NACRS) Abstracting Manuals for the collection of diagnoses, interventions and specific data elements. Experience with Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, MS Teams, Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and a demonstrated pattern of professional and personal development. Ability to work independently with strong organizational, time management, analytical, and technical skills to effectively handle demands of workload and deadlines, working effectively under pressure and showing good judgment. Effective interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and written). Ability to work with minimal supervision under considerable stress. Able to work as a team member to achieve area and department goals. Demonstrated ongoing professional and personal development. Knowledge of the Health Information Act. Travel Expense Reimbursement: Permanent and temporary employees working in excess of one (1) year whose work sites are above the 57th parallel are also eligible to receive an annual reimbursement of personal travel expenses to an annual maximum of $1,235. Eligible employees will be reimbursed for the cost of one (1) round trip, per calendar year, to any destination within Alberta. Travel must originate from a community above the 57th parallel to any destination within Alberta and cannot be carried over.

Preferred Qualifications:

1-year minimum coding experience with ICD-10-CA/CCI. Consideration given to those who have not coded within 2 years but have a certificate from a CCHIM approved Coding Refresher or Coding Specialist Program. Experience with Connect Care (EPIC) & 3M HDM abstracting system. Certified Coding & Classification Specialist (CCCS) certification with CCHIM.
