Description: The Assistant Head Nurse (AHN) provides effective clinical leadership, functional supervision and, as needed, performs front line Registered Nursing duties. The AHN promotes and models leadership competencies by demonstrating good judgement and critical thinking skills, and developing and maintaining strong nursing practice in the designated scope of practice. The AHN fosters team effectiveness, demonstrating excellent interpersonal and leadership skills, communicating effectively and seeking to resolve staff issues. The AHN develops a supportive environment for multidisciplinary learning. This position is covered by the terms and conditions of the UNA Collective Agreement.

Required Qualifications: Graduate of a Registered Nurse program or recognized equivalent required. Active registration with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA) or College of Registered Psychiatric Nurse of Alberta (CRPNA) is required. Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider (Level C) required.
Additional Required Qualifications:Graduate of Registered Nurse or Registered Psychiatric Nurse program. Current and active registration with the College and Association of Registered Nurses of Alberta (C.A.R.N.A.) and/or the College of Registered Psychiatric Nurses of Alberta (C.R.P.N.A) required. Minimum of 5 years working in an acute mental health or community mental health setting. Minimum of 1 year AHN experience or 3 years charge nurse experience. Heart and Stroke Foundation BLS Level C Health Care Provider is required. Experience in mental health or related settings required. Ability to provide leadership and function as a team member. Ability to work independently. Ability to work in a fast paced and, at times, highly stressful environment. Strong assessment skills to recognize and respond appropriately to patient changes in status. Strong communication skills and ability to adapt communication style to meet varying needs. Good organizational and conflict resolution skills required. Excellent time management skills. Proven dependability. Ability to be objective in decision making. Ability to be proactive with independent learning needs and up to date with current competencies.
Preferred Qualifications:I.V. certification and Alaris pump training preferred. Current Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NCI) training preferred. Working knowledge in addictions preferred. Leadership and communication courses.
